A scarce first UK edition of this travel work by Paul Du Chaillu, preceded by a rarer undated first US edition. Telling of the author's journeys and experiences in African forests and jungles, sharing observations, hunting experiences, flora and fauna of the areas, anecdotes, and much more. Illustrated with black and white plates by Victor Perard. Paul Du Chaillu was a French-American traveller, zoologist and anthropologist. He became famous in the mid to late nineteenth century as the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and the Pygmy people of Central Africa.  In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally sound with minor shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, general light soiling to the boards and spine, slight darkening to the spine. With evidence of the removal of a sticker to the front pastedown. Internally, the binding is slightly tender, split to p.5 held by three cords only, with pp. 1-4 and plate loose but present.
