Dated from Jisc 1912. Bug-Jargal follows a friendship between enslaved African prince and a French military officer during the Haitian Revolution. Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné constitutes a political plea for the abolition of death penalty. Claude Gueux is a short story, considered to be an early example of 'true crime' fiction. Sharing Hugo's thoughts on injustice, which are explored later in more depth in Les Miserables. It was considered a great educational work, so much so that the editor of Revue de Paris arranged for copies to be sent to all deputies of France. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece. With half titles to each story. In a smart full calf prize binding, second prize awarded to C L H Tolley in 1914 for Classics.  In a full calf school prize binding, with new marbled endpapers. Externally generally smart with minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the boards and spine. The front hinges are slightly strained, holding firm. Internally, firmly bound.
