A first edition copy of this autobiographical work by Stephen Donoghue, a top-tier English flat-race jockey in the early twentieth century. Presenting this fascinating memoir of Stephen Donoghue, a champion jockey in England during the early twentieth century. He was a champion many times over in the course of his racing career, winning ten times between 1914 and 1923. He was also the only jockey to win the English Triple Crown twice (in 1915 and 1917). Containing thirty-six plates of illustrations, four of which are in colour. Collated, complete. This copy came from the library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire, the previous home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (1902-1968). She was an English socialite and through her mother was the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt stamping to the front board and spine. Externally, slightly bumping to the head and tail of spine and extremities. A small amount of rubbing to the joints and some minor shelf wear. A small amount of damage to the front free-endpaper due to a sticker being removed. Internally, hinges strained but firm. Binding is slightly tender in places, though still firm. Plates adjacent to pages 148 and 182 have detached but are present, and plate adjacent to page 160 is lifting at the head but is attached. A few instances of spotting, but generally pages are clean.
