Stahl, this work consists of the text of such luminaries as de Balzac and Benjamin Franklin, accompanied by the vignette illustrations of Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, better known as the French caricaturist Grandville.Titled 'the private and public life of animals', Grandville's caricatures of these animals clearly represent the governing representatives of France, and is a commentary on these political personalities.Tipped in between front endpapers in a four page illustrated English language biography of Grandville from James Laver, describing him as, amongst his contemporaries, 'not only the most violent but the most mordant of political caricaturists&apos.To the front pastedown is the bookplate of Leonard Harrison Matthews, a well regarded British zoologist, especially known for his research and writings on marine mammals.To the front free endpaper are the contemporary owner's inscriptions, dated 1880 and 1893, Paris. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing to boards and extremities. Bookplate and newspaper clipping to front pastedown. Contemporary owner's inscriptions to front free endpapers. Four page biography of illustrator tipped in between endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting throughout, most concentrated to illustrations and pages surrounding them. Very Good .
