The first edition of this topographical study of the flora of Suffolk, with descriptions of various plants found in the county. Written by W. M. Hind with the assistance of Churchill Babington. With an introductory chapter by Wheelton Hind. Complete with a folding coloured map to the frontispiece. Previous ownership signature 'L Harrison Matthews' to the front free endpaper, British zoologist, especially known for his research and writings on marine mammals. The present volume is also signed 'Joseph Hind.' A typed letter pasted to the front pastedown, addressed to Matthews, states 'I believe Joseph Hind was Rector of Felsham and a brother of the author of the Flora.' Signed F W Simpson. In the letter, Simpson thanks Matthews for the record of 'Orobanche elatior' which was entered in the manuscript of their Flora of Suffolk, going to print the following month. Dated 1981. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things&apos. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and some cracking to both the upper and lower joints, holding firm. The spine is slightly faded. Some general light soiling to the boards. Inscribed 'L Harrison Matthews' and 'Joseph Hind' to the front free endpaper, with a letter addressed to Matthews pasted to the front pastedown. The front hinge slightly strained to the frontispiece, holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. With the occasional minor spotting to the odd leaf, although the pages are generally very clean and bright throughout. Illustrated with a folding coloured map to the frontispiece. Good .
