It was the site of numerous uprisings against the monarchy, including the English Civil War and the War of the Roses, and contains an unusually high number of abandoned settlements, possibly relating to the soil quality and the Black Death.These nine volumes cover the records of Hertfordshire from 1581 until 1894. Volumes I-III concern the sessions roll between 1581 and 1894, volume IV concerns the sessions records of the Liberty of St. Albans Division between 1770 and 1840, and the final five volumes concern the sessions books between 1658 and 1833.Written by William John Hardy, an English archivist and antiquarian. Along with William Page, he worked on the county records for Hertfordshire, whose county was pioneering the care of its archives.Compiled under the direction of the Hertfordshire County Council.In nine volumes; lacking the tenth. Scarcely found as a collection.From Gaddesden Library, of Gaddesden Place, Hemel Hampstead; with their bookplate to the front pastedown. With the ownership stamp of Frederick Halsey, 1st Baronet of Gaddesden Place. Halsey was an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons for thirty-two years at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the original full cloth bindings. Externally generally smart, with just some slight minor wear including bumping to the head and tail of the spines. Ownership bookplate and stamp to the front pastedown and endpaper respectively.
