Second state without Scribner's 'A' to the copyright page, matching first issue point in the black cloth binding with gilt to the spine. James Jones' famous debut novel, focusing on some members of the US Army infantry company in Hawaii before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, loosely based on the author's experiences in the Company E of the Hawaiian Division's 27th Infantry in the pre-World War II. Winner of the National Book Award, and named one of the best one hundred novels of the twentieth century by the Modern library Board.
