Description: London, James Leake, 1736. Leather. A very scarce early edition of Mary Chandler's celebrated poem on Bath. Mary Chandler wrote many poems, with this poem being her most esteemed. It was addressed to Princess Amelia and celebrates the city and the people that live there. It is regarded as being one of the earliest examples of a sustained urban topographical poem by a woman. Scarce in any edition. Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Bookplate to the front pastedown for Henry Fullwood Rose. Book label to the front pastedown, J O Edwards. Bookplate to the rear pastedown, R E M Peach.ESTC T63103. Complete with the half-title and publisher's adverts to the rear. Printed by Samuel Richardson for James Leake. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Henry Fulwood Rose&apos. Book label to the front pastedown 'J.O.Edwards&apos. Contemporary notes to the recto of front endpaper regarding the editions of this poem. Further contemporary inscriptions to the half-title 'Mrs G Rose Laglen&apos. Loosely inserted is a poem by Mary Chandler to Mrs J-S 'Written at her request 1743' which has been handwritten by a former owner. Former owner has also loosely inserted a biography of Mary Chandler. Bookplate to the rear pastedown, R E M Peach. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with just the occasional light spots to pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
