He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, with a minor tear to the head of the front joint and a faint damp marking to the front board and tail of the spine. With Kenn Back's bookplate to the front pastedown. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front free endpaper, dated 1941. Internally, firmly bound. With some minor spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the occasional leaf, although the pages are generally very clean and bright throughout.
