The history of the Earldom of Mar during five hundred years by Alexander Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, Lord Lindsay, and other. The first edition, complete in two volumes. With an preface by Alexander's wife, Margaret Crawford and Balcarres. With letters to the lord Clerk Register of Scotland, the oldest surviving Great Officer of State in the country, with origins in the thirteenth century to care and maintain public records. The title of the Earl of Mar was created seven times, currently there are only two existing. An ancient earldom with history that dates back as far as 1014. This book opens with a section titled 'Circumstances under which my Protest took place,' with a discussion on the death of John Erskine, Earl of Mar who died childless. This caused disputes over whom the title should be passed upon, leading the House of Lords to create two earldoms. An extensive history carefully studied in these volumes. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. The head and tail of the spine are slightly chipped, as well as the rear joint of vol. II. With Colin Currie ex libris bookplate tot he front pastedown of vol. I, and to the front free endpaper of vol. II; With Alex J Dennistom Brown bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume; and a newspaper column discussing 'The Mar Case' tipped in to the front free endpaper of vol. I. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor spotting to the fore edge, affecting only slightly the first and last few leaves, and a slight offsetting to the endpapers, as usual.
