Description: London, Anon, 1834. First edition. Disbound. A very scarce selection of letters published regarding the National Regeneration Society and factory reform. A very scarce work, which contains 3 letters. The first is from Mr William Fitton to Mr John Fielden, the second is from Mr John Fielden to Mr William Fitton, and the third is from David Holt (a mill proprietor) to Mr John Fielden.Printed in 1834, the same year as the Tolpuddle Martyrs were convicted of 'swearing a secret oath' during a labour dispute. They became a popular cause for the early union and workers' rights movements. All of the letters to this work are in support of reform in England's factories. John Fielden, alongside many others, formed the National Regeneration Society which intended to accumulate enough millworkers so that workers, adults and children, do not have to work more than an eight hour day. The National Regeneration Society wanted to appeal to the mill-owners which led to a split in opinion. David Holt, a mill proprietor, supported Fielden as he felt that working long hours had driven down wages leading to 'further diminution of prices and margins' meaning mill owners are falling prey to speculators and money dealers. Fielden was a British industrialist and had invested heavily in power looms. These letters contain a development of all the principles and all the views connected with this important contemplated change in the manufacturing affairs of England. A scarce pamphlet, which details the views of reformers during the early nineteenth century. Disbound. Externally, generally smart. Former owner's inscription to the title page. A few handling marks to the front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots to pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
