Douglas explains the necessity of this volume as at the time of publication there were no works offering a 'complete history of Siena in any language' and that 'there are but few in our tongue which treat with any serious and scholarly spirit the history of the Italian States' during the Renaissance period. Populated with illustrated plates containing reproductions of the art of the period, and with two folding maps of Siena to the rear, one in colour.
