Author: Langton Douglas Title: A History of Siena
Description: London, John Murray, 1902. First edition. Cloth. A history of Siena from a leading art historian of the region, with numerous illustrated plates. The first edition of this work from British art critic, lecturer, and author, and director of the National Gallery of Ireland Robert Langston Douglas. Known chiefly as an authority on Sienese art, he published a number of works on the subject. Douglas explains the necessity of this volume as at the time of publication there were no works offering a 'complete history of Siena in any language' and that 'there are but few in our tongue which treat with any serious and scholarly spirit the history of the Italian States' during the Renaissance period. Populated with illustrated plates containing reproductions of the art of the period, and with two folding maps of Siena to the rear, one in colour. Contemporary owner's inscription to front free endpaper, dated 1902. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Fading to back strip, with bumping to spine head and tail and some marks to boards. Contemporary owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean, with the odd spot. Spots concentrated towards the start of the work. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
