Description: London, Smith, Elder and Co, 1874. First edition. Hardback. A charmingly bound and very scarce first edition of a well reviewed Victorian era novel. The very scarce two volume first edition of this work of Victorian era fiction. Authorship is credited to Mrs. Thomas Erskine, about whom very little is known except that she published four novels in her lifetime, of which this is the second.Telling the story of a virtuous young woman, who, to support her ailing father, becomes a paid companion on an English estate, reviews at the time were highly favourable. The novel was identified as 'far above the usual circulating library bit', with the Literary magazine 'Athenaeum' giving a November 21st 1874 review wherein the reviewer states that 'In the sustained fidelity with which the characters, few and simple as they are, maintain their consistency and distinctness, Mrs. Erskine shows . care and minuteness of observation&apos. In the original half paper vellum binding, with paper covered boards. Slight discolouration to back strip, with shelf wear to spine head and tail. Some rubbing to board extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd small mark. Evidence of repairs to gutters. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
