While title page states this was published from 1817-1819, tail of frontispiece specifies publication date as July 1st, 1819. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper 'To George Doudney Esq. With kind regards from his old friend William Gandy 1890&apos. The individual gifting this work is likely a relative of the author John Peter Gandy. Tipped in to the front endpaper is an obituary notice for Hannah Gandy, hand-dated 1902. Hannah Gandy was the niece of the author of this work. Her father was Joseph Gandy A.R.A. The first edition to be complete in one volume. Frontispiece, illustrated title page ('View of Pompeii'), two plans and 77 plates. Illustrated throughout. Sir William Gell was a classical archaeologist and illustrator. This is his best known work, which was originally published between 1817 and 1832. The illustrations to this study show the results of archaeological digs at Pompeii. This is one of many works by Gell regarding archaeological sites in Italy, and its rich history. Rebound, in a full cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Former owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
