Two volumes bound as one. Mary Anne Clarke (1776-1852) was the mistress of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, the second son of King George III. She published her memoirs across numerous works. She was not treated as she would hope by the Duke of York, and she testified before the House of Commons that she herself had sold army commissions without his knowledge. The scandal caused great controversy, forcing the Duke to resign. Daphne du Maurier was her great-granddaughter, and took great interest in her life, writing works relating to her exploits.A first edition of this work.Two volumes bound as one. In a half calf binding. Externally rather worn; front joint is worn, with rubbing to the extremities and head and tail of the spine. Backstrip is lifting.
