Ellen Wood, known as Mrs Henry Wood, 1814 - 1887, was an English writer and journal editor. In late 1867 she became editor and proprietor of The Argosy, a monthly magazine started by Alexander Strahan in 1865.. Wood enlisted some other women contributors to The Argosy (Hesba Stretton, Julia Kavanagh, Christina Rossetti, Sarah Doudney, Rosa Nouchette Carey), but in the early years she may have written up to half of the contents of each issue. Bound in half calf with marbled covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with shelf wear. Title labels on spine of volume twenty-seven has torn off and is beginning to tear and without careful handling will tear free. Previous owner's signature on front free-endpaper. Internally, hinges in volume twenty-seven are slightly strained but firm. Pages are firmly bound. Spotting to the first and last pages of both volumes, and a scattered spots throughout.
