William Ewart Gladstone was a British statesman and Liberal politician, who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1868 to 1894. Gladstone had anti-Catholic ideals, in particular he opposed the bishops and pope. In 1874, he published a pamphlet titled The Vatican Decrees in their Bearing on Civil Allegiance, expressing his outrage towards the First Vatican Council's dogmatising of the Papal Infallibility in 1870. This pamphlet sold five hundred thousand copies by the end of the year. This sparked controversy and much criticism, to which Gladstone replied with this fascinating pamphlet, defending his ideas. In Vaticanism, he described the Catholic Church as "nothing but one giddy height of despotism, and one dead level of religious subservience."This is the first edition of 1875, disbound. Disbound.
