Author: Thomas Carte Title: A General History of England
Description: London, J. Hodges, 1747-55. First edition. Leather. A complete first edition set of Thomas Carte's controversial History of England, bound in contemporary reverse calf. Written by Thomas Carte (1686-1754), an English historian. He was in favour of Jacobitism, and lost the favour of many of his patrons by declaring that the 'King's Evil' had been cured by the 'Old Pretender' in the first volume of this work. However, he continued to publish three subsequent volumes, one posthumously. It is thought that the work would have been more successful had he not caused controversy with the anti-Jacobites, as it is meticulous and thoroughly researched. This work opens with the first Britons, and concludes with the death of King John.Carte's other works included a biography of James Duke of Ormonde, 'History of the Revolutions of Portugal' and 'A General Account of the Necessary Materials for a History of England&apos.Complete in four folios. Each volume is a first edition. A new edition later followed in 1851.Volume I was printed in 1747, volumes II and III in 1750 and volume IV printed posthumously in 1755.ESTC No. T101742.Uncommonly found complete.A marvellous example of an interesting and controversial piece of the history of Britain. In a reverse calf binding. Externally, generally smart; the volumes have been smartly rebacked with gilt calf spines. The original boards have slight loss to extremities, in particular to the lower corner of volume III, and the odd mark. With renewed endpapers. Small ownership inscription to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd spot. A few marks to pages 116 and 117 of volume IV. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
