Of the 12 plates listed to volume I, the 'View of Temple Bar' is lacking. The 'Plan of London' to page 881 is lacking and there is an additional plate on London after the Fire of London that is not stated to the list bound at page 505. Stockdale's large plan of London is often missing from this work. Volume II has 23 plates listed (including 8 maps) and this copy is lacking the 'County Round of London' map. Therefore, this set contains 34 plates total. Former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Tervoe. Another former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, D L Cumming. A comprehensive study of London's history, from the landing of Julius Caesar to the start of the nineteenth century. Hunter passed away before the completion of this work, and the publisher Stockdale with the assistance of hacks completed the work for publication. This work was initially published in parts from 1796. With the list of subscribers to the start.Internally, a very bright work with beautiful engravings. In half calf bindings, with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the extremities. Small loss to the head and tail of spine to volume I. A few light patches of damp staining to the boards. Front joint to volume II is cracked with the hinge slightly tender. All other hinges are slightly strained but firm. Very Good . Ill.: Various.
