Title: The Foreign Tour of Messrs Brown, Jones and Robinson
Description: London, Bradbury & Evans, 1855. Leather. A beautiful illustrated travelogue by renowned Victorian illustrator Richard Doyle, in a contemporary leather binding. This work humorously describes Brown, Jones and Robinson's travels across Europe, including to Switzerland and Italy. It was a popular Victorian work.Richard Doyle, the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was a popular Victorian illustrator. Training under his father, the political cartoonist John Doyle, the young Richard Doyle would join the famous 'Punch' magazine aged 19. Entrusted with designing the masthead for the magazine, his design would feature on the cover of 'Punch' for almost a century. Though a prolific illustrator, he was know for being incredibly unreliable, once nearly losing a commission to illustrate Thackeray's 'The Newcomes', due to consistent tardiness. This contributed to his limited successes during his lifetime.Richly illustrated with cartoons by Doyle. In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally a trifle worn, with bumping to the extremities resulting in loss to the leather, as well as to the head, tail and joints of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. The final page is loose but presented, with edges slightly torn and tattered. Good . Ill.: Richard Doyle. Good .
