A lovely copy of this work.With the signature of Jack Spencer Churchill to the recto of front endpapers to both volumes. Jack Churchill was the younger brother of former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. Russell Howell Gronow was a Welsh Grenadier Guards officer, a dandy and a writer of celebrated reminiscences. He was ensigned in 1812 and took part in several military operations. By June 1815 he was a lieutenant of his regiment. Gronow's reminiscences were extremely popular as they gave an interesting insight into his military career, the camp, the court and the clubs. Volume I also specifically references the war with France.An amusing personal account, giving an insight into the British and French society of the 19th, albeit from the bias of the renowned dandy. In uniform half calf bindings. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Patches of rubbing to the boards and raised bands. Hinges are slightly strained but firm.
