The tales being William Cowper's The Diverting History of John Gilpin: showing how he went farther than he intended, and came safe home again; The House That Jack Built; The Babes in the Wood; and An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog. A lovely, entertaining copy with rhyming tales, illustrated and compiled by the noted illustrator Randolph Caldecott, who greatly influenced the illustrations of nineteenth century children's books. With various plated both in colour and in black and white to embellish and enrich the volume. Rebound in quarter vellum with cloth covered boards and marbled boards. Externally very smart with slight shelf wear and a slight rubbing to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean throughout with the occasional handling mark and the odd spot to the occasional leaf. The plate facing page eighteen to 'An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog' is chipped to the lower gutter, affecting the text on page 20.
