Description: London, Edwin J Brett, 1882. First edition. Cloth. A very scarce copy of the 'Cottage Edition' of Mary E Bennett's novel 'Elinor Clare&apos. A first edition thus, being the Cottage girl edition which was issued in 33 parts. This was a cheap reissue following the novel's initial publication in 1868. It is a very scarce work in any edition.Mary E Bennett was a prolific author of penny novels such as 'The Witch of the Water-side' and 'The Gipsy Bride, or the Miser's Daughter&apos. Many of her works cannot be traced as she wrote so many cheap novels. Bound from the original parts, with a title page for the novel which was issued. This copy has been bound without the very scarce 'coloured picture' that was issued with the first three parts. A very uncommon work by this important Victorian author. In a full cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Minor shelfwear to the edges. Front hinge is strained but firm. Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper 'Mary Ann Moore Thicket Lodge Feb 24 1883&apos.
