His Five Towns novels are set in a fictionalised version of the Potteries. He believed was that literature should be available to all ordinary people, and did not agree with the literary élite, belief that is reflected in his engaging and smooth writing. In the publisher's original red cloth binding, with titles stamped in black to front board and spine.
