Description: Edinburgh, David Douglas, 1885. Hardback. A new, uncommon illustrated edition of Marjorie Fleming's story. The story of Marjorie Fleming. New edition, illustrated.Marjorie Fleming was a Scottish child writer and poet who received appreciation by many popular writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Leslie Stephen, and supposedly Walter Scott. She is best known for a diary, partly included in this volume, that she kept during the last eighteen months of her life. She sadly passed away in 1811, almost nine years old, of what is now believed to have been meningitis. Dr. John Brown was an Edinburgh physician and a noted essayist. In this volume he delineates the story of her friendship with Sir Walter Scott. This edition with the charming pictures of childhood by Brookes, was one of the most attractive presentations of this work. The frontispiece portrait is a reproduction of a watercolor, presumed to be the work of Isabella Keith, who was Marjorie's beloved cousin under whose tutelage, she spent the last few years of her life.Complete with lovely illustrations by Warwick Brookes, painter and draughtsman specialising in the portraiture of young children. In paper covered boards. Externally, sound. Loss to the spine, and several marks to the boards. Marks are more visible due to the light colour of the boards. Professional repairs to the hinges.
