Robert Jacob Gordon (1743-1795) was an explorer, linguist, solider and naturalist. He made his first journey to the Cape Colony in 1772, and returned as captain in 1777. He was responsible for defending the Cape, and upon a British invasion subsequent to France's invasion of the Netherlands, he complied with the British, leading to accusations of treason by his soliders. Gordon committed suicide as a result of becoming an outcast.This is a limited edition, volume forty-seven of one hundred and fifty, and is presented in a slipcase with a portrait of the subject on it. The book is in a lovely half crushed morocco binding with bright marbled boards.Profusely illustrated throughout with vignette and full plate illustrations in colour and black and white.
