Louis Cohen - Reminiscences of Kimberley

Title: Reminiscences of Kimberley
Description: London, Bennett & Co. 1911. First edition. Leather. An extremely scarce novel from the early twentieth century in a charming modern binding. This is a notorious novel, published in 1911 but withdrawn after a successful lawsuit by a figure portrayed unfavourably, Sir Joseph Benjamin Robinson, 1st Baronet (1840-1929). Robinson was a South African mining magnate, known as 'the Buccaneer' in Kimberley, the town for which the novel is named; he received £1000 from Cohen, and £100 from the publisher for the allegations that his career was founded on his fraudulence and swindling. Cohen was a cousin of Barney Barnato, another magnate in the diamond mines. Banarto sold out to Cecil Rhodes (with money borrowed from the Rothchilds). Barnarto's son, Barney financed the Bentley company with this money during their le Mans winning period in the 1920s. On account of the story behind this novel, it is very uncommon. Set in Kimberley on the Northern Cape of South Africa, renowned for its diamond mines. Rebound in a half crushed morocco binding with marbled boards. Rebound in a modern half calf binding. Externally lovely. Ownership stamp and inscription to front endpapers. Internally firmly bound, pages slightly age toned but otherwise bright and clean. Near Fine . Ill.: None. Near Fine .
