A second edition three volume collection of this biographical sketch of James Beattie James Beattie (1735-1803) was a Scottish philosopher, poet and co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. known for his 'Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth' which spoke out against David Hume and saw enormous success. He was also known for writing against slavery. Sir William Forbes was a Scottish banker, baronet, philanthropist and writer. A friend of Beattie's, he first published 'An Account of the Life and Writings of James Beattie LL. D.' in 1806. Contains an ownership bookplate to the front pastedown of all three volumes to Sir Henry Jardine (1766-1851), an antiquarian who founded the Bannatyne Club with his friend Sir Walter Scott in 1823. The club was a society interested in rare Scottish literature. In a half calf binding. There is a frontispiece engraving of the subject in Volume I. Half calf binding. Externally generally smart, some rubbing to the heads and tails of the spine and extremities with a little loss to leather. Ownership bookplate to all three volumes belonging to Henry Jardine, along with an inscription on volume I reading 'Ol. 3Vol. 1813&apos. Internally firmly bound, pages generally bright and clean, some offsetting to title pages and page 17 volume I has some spotting. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
