He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration.A very scarce first impression, which has no folding maps. The maps were not made in time for this issue, and therefore were only published with the second issue. Another prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper, 'Patty Clarke'Translated into English by E M G Jayne.This work forms of financier Lars Christensen's impressions of the Antarctic. He visited the area primarily for whaling and sealing. Despite this, Christensen makes comments on the botany and geography of the area. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With price-clipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent. Dustwrapper is very smart. Minor closed tears to the tail of spine. Small closed tear to the head of front joint. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and extremities. A few small chips to the head and tail of spine, and small tidemark to the spine. Bookplate of Kenn Back to the verso of front endpaper.
