His narrative poem of the American Civil War 'John Brown's Body' won him the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. This poem was first delivered on Alumni Day, May 6 1933 on the occasion of the presentation of Brigadier-General Stephen Vincent Benet to the University of Georgia.  Preceding the poem there is a brief biography of Brigadier Benet.
