Description: London, J and R Tonson, 1755. Leather. David Garrick's own copy of this Ben Jonson work he revived with adaptations in 1751. With manuscript additions by Garrick. 'Every Man in his Humour' was a 1598 play by Jonson which belongs in the sub-genre of the 'humours comedy&apos. Each major character is dominated by an over-riding humour or obsession. This is an early printing of Garrick's revival, with this work first being printed in 1752. David Garrick's revival of this play is what earns the work longstanding currency on the English stage. With an engraved frontispiece, and red and black printed title page.Manuscript addition by Garrick to the end of act IV scene I, page 49. Minor correction to page 56. This copy was later in the possession of Reverend Thomas Rackett, who purchased many volumes from Garrick's library. See Christie's New York sale, 1988 lot 147. ESTC reference no. T128962. An important association copy of this play. In a half calf binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the boards and spine. Small loss to the head of the spine and to the extremities. Front board is detached but present. Front blank is loosening. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Garrick's additions to the end of Act IV Scene I and to page 56. Occasional light spots to pages. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
