Volume I has a portrait tipped on the the verso to the front free endpaper, and to the reverse of the frontispiece. Volume II with an extra illustration bound to the reverse, and a newspaper clipping bound between pages 332 and 333.Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, four folding plates, one colour plate, and one-hundred and forty-five plates. Twelve plates in this volume have additional illustrations adhered to the reverse.Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, three folding plate, one watercolour plate, and one-hundred and forty-one plates. Nine plates in this volume have additional illustrations adhered to the reverse. The plate of George III facing page 290 has black glasses drawn on by a prior owner.With a prior owner's charming handmade booklet, listing all of the plates in the work, written by hand in ink throughout. This booklet lists all of the additional plates they adhered into the two volumes. The booklet is bound with a faded pink ribbon. Written by Thomas Faulkner, who was an English booksellers and topographer, noted for his three topographical works on Chelsea, Fulham, and Kensington.Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'James Walsh. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards, with a pamphlet. Externally, generally smart. Front board of Volume I may detach with further handling, held by one cord only. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Light bumping to the extremities. Small amount of loss to the spine labels. Small crack to the tail of the rear joint of Volume II. Rear hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Hinges of Volume II are starting but firm. Plate tipped on to the verso to the front free endpaper of Volume I. Folding plate from the ILN is adhered to the rear pastedown of Volume I. A little edgewear and a few marks to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot and mark. Plate tipped on to the reverse of the frontispiece of Volume I. Folding map to Volume I with a small closed tear. Sticker saying 'Chelsea' stuck to page 1 of Volume I, and a 'Kings Road' sticker to page 43 of Volume I. Plate facing page 89 of Volume I with a short biography adhered to the head. Plate of Smollett facing page 272 of Volume I is detached but present. Plate of Joseph Bark facing page 181 is detached but present. The plate of George III facing page 290 has black glasses drawn on by a prior owner. Volume I has a portrait tipped on the the verso to the front free endpaper, and to the reverse of the frontispiece. Volume II with an extra illustration bound to the reverse, and a newspaper clipping bound between pages 332 and 333. Some of the plates are a little closely cropped though with no loss.
