Amery was known for his opposition to appeasement, and his interest in military preparedness. During the Second Boer War, he was a correspondent for The Times. His attack of the commander Sir Redvers Henry Buller contributed to his sacking. He was the only correspondent to visit Boer forces. This work advocates for the reorganisation of the British Army, as the Boer War had exposed deficiencies in its practice.
