This is the true first edition, identified by the watermark to the paper being a cardinal's hat surmounted by a cross; the dimensions are 20 x 12.3cm; misprint 'altre' on G6 is corrected by hand to 'arte'; the colophon states 'le stampino' rather than 'la stampino&apos. STC Italian P.81; not in Adams or Gamba. The 'Prose della Volgar Lingua' is Bembo's most influential work. It was written in the vernacular, and explains how Petrarch is the perfect model for poetry. He analyses and discusses verse composition in great detail, touching on rhyme, stress, the sound of words and balance. Bembo's theory explains that a variety of emotions can be produced through specific placement of words in a poem, coupled with the precision of consonant and vowel placement in the line.
