It was so popular that it ran to numerous editions, there had been eighteen editions by 1824. This poem chronicles the trials and tribulations that his fictitious heroine Serena faces. It explores how she overcame them through her virtues of a pleasant nature and sweet temper. A didactic poem, 'The Triumphs of Temper' is said to have reformed the entire feminine mind of England. In it, Hayley aspired to teach young women the virtues of a pleasant nature. (ODNB). This poem is a morality tale for young women of the eighteenth century. In a mottled calf binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Front joint is strained. Spine is lifting slightly at the tail. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Inscription to the recto of front endpaper. A further inscription to the half-title. Prior owner has spelled their name with one letter per page to the first twelve pages. Internally, firmly bound.
