A very scarce work, published after the fourth edition of 1784 and prior to the sixth edition of 1788. An American printing of the poem, issued in Philadelphia. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, 'Aima Maria Dawson April 1850 from Miss Pipe' 'The Triumphs of Temper' is William Hayley's best known poem. It was so popular that it ran to numerous editions, there had been eighteen editions by 1824. This poem chronicles the trials and tribulations that his fictitious heroine Serena faces. It explores how she overcame them through her virtues of a pleasant nature and sweet temper. This poem is a morality tale for young women of the eighteenth century. In a half calf binding with marbled covered boards. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Patches of light rubbing to the boards.
