To page 192 this is a reissue of the 200 page sixth edition. There are then an additional twenty pages. Page 192 has 'finis' to the bottom. ESTC reference no: T98385. This work is a collection of songs compiled by Freeth, who regularly set his words to popular tunes. They would be about remarkable events in local and national news and he would perform them nightly at his coffee house. His coffee houses attracted eminent visitors and became a political meeting place due to Freeth's material demonstrating his radical, nonconformist views. Freeth's works were published in more than a dozen collections between 1766 and 1805, with the likes of John Baskerville among his printers. This work is one of his most substantial. and contains ballads on war, national emergencies, and affairs of the state including the victories of Earl Howe and Lord Nelson. Freeth's good humour and effective turn of phrase earned him the reputation of being one of the best political ballad writers in the kingdom (ODNB) A smart copy of this work, in a lovely half morocco binding. In a half crushed morocco binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with just some light shelfwear to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned.
