These essays regard Master Betty or 'the young Roscius&apos. Betty was a popular child actor of the nineteenth century. He showed his desire for the stage from the age of eleven and his first role was Osman in Voltaire's 'Zair&apos. Other roles played include Young Norval in John Home's 'Douglas' and Hamlet. These essays were published at the start of Betty's career, and Bisset notes to the editor's preface 'the editor does not wish to influence or to bias the minds of the public- his only aim is to enable them to judge for themselves&apos.
