Description: London, W. Flexney, 1761. Paperback. A scarce second edition of Charles Churchill's popular satire work on the London stage, bound here in later wraps. The second edition of this work. A scarce work. ESTC citation number T74903. Bound without the half-title. Otherwise, complete. Bound in later paper wraps. 'Rosciad' is a satirical poem, satirising the London Stage, naming every prominent actor of the day unfavourably, except for David Garrick. The poem brought immediate and brilliant success to Churchill, saving him from bankruptcy with recognition and money. Though it was popular when it was published, the work was originally refused by several publishers, and Churchill had to publish it at his own expense. Written by Charles Churchill, a noted English satirist. In paper wraps. Externally, smart. Small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. A very light amount of edgewear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with some spots and marks. Evidence of paper wraps and marks to the gutter of the title page and page 34. Prior owner's ink correction to leaf B1, crossing out word 'bear' and replacing it with 'are&apos. Title page is shaved a little to the tail, but does not affect text. Discolouration, possibly a tidemark, to the head of the title page and following page, and to the head of a few other pages. Very small chip to page 23/4, affecting two words very lightly, not with loss to words. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
