Description: Hamburg, Gottfried Schultzens Kosten, 1679-1682. Vellum. A very smart copy of this scarce German translation of Nicolas de Blegny's notable medical journal. Frequently regarded as the first French medical journal. First thus, the first edition of Johann Lange's translation. It seems that Lange was a prolific translator, having produced the first German edition of the Koran in 1688. Four parts in one volume with separate title pages, as called for. With seven folding engraved or woodcut plates and numerous in-text illustrations. The illustrations include a foetus, conjoined twins, bones in a hand and a cactus from America. Engraved title page. In a lovely contemporary vellum binding, with functioning clasps. Nicolas de Blegny became the physician to the Duc d'Orleans, Queen Marie Therese and King Louis XIV of France. Following accusations of plagiarism and fraud he fell from grace and was incarcerated for eight years. Prior to this, Blegny wrote several works, such as reviews on coffee, tea and chocolate, he founded the first medical journal, 'Nouvelles Decouvertes' and also wrote on many doctrines This medical journal looks at the most recent discoveries in medicine at the time of publication. Its French title is 'Les nouvelles decouvertes sur toutes les parties de la medicine&apos. This was first published in 1679 and originally reported the transactions of his society, the Academy of Recent Discoveries in Medicine. The medical journal was later published after three years as a collection titled 'Zodiacus Medico-Gallicus&apos. With separate title pages to each section as called for. A very scarce work. In a contemporary vellum binding. Externally, smart with the claps present and in working order. Light scuffs to spine and a few marks to the boards. Spine is lifting slightly to the tail. Evidence of label removal to the spine. Front hinge is strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Stephan Pagl&apos. Inscription to the recto of front endpaper dated 1896. Internally, binding is occasionally strained. Pages are generally bright. RII closed tear. Excision possibly at Rii. Occasional scattered spot to pages. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
