Author: Le Marquis de Custine Title: La Russie En 1839
Description: Paris, Librairie D'Aymot, 1843. Leather. The first edition of Astolphe de Custine's important work on Russia. Recounting his trip in Russia from June-September 1939, Custine discusses meeting Tsar Nicolas I and his wife as well as the ambassador of France, Prosper Barante. Presented as a collection of letters written during his trip, Custine provides many fascinating observations of Russia which was little known to the rest of Europe at that time. He is a harsh critic of the country and is against the Tsarist regime, despite being a royalist himself. He favours a more constitutional monarchy. This work was extremely popular upon initial publication, and went through many printings in quick succession. However, the work was banned in Russia by Nicolas I. Several copies were smuggled in, with exerts appearing in Russian journals. A complete edition of the work was not published in Russia until the late twentieth century. This work looks at the social fabric and economy of Russia during Nicolas I's reign. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the recto of front endpaper, D M Shapiro, Nuffield College 27 Jan 1961.
