This wonderful two volume set chronicles the interesting and illuminating history of the Royal Astronomical Society from its founding in 1820 all the way up to 1980, just a few years before this edition was published. The first volume in this set was a history originally published by the Royal Astronomical Society themselves in 1923, reprinted alongside the more recent history included in the second volume. The RAS promotes the study of all branches of science related to astronomy, maintains a research library and advisory role to the UK government, and awards annually a Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to the science, with more famous recipients including Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein. Two volumes. Monochrome plates throughout both volumes, collated complete. An excellent work of history, these two volumes tell the story of the people who told the stories of the stars. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt stamped RAS emblem to front boards. Externally, both volumes very smart, with only minor handling marks to the boards.
