A biography on the life of Nicola Gabrini, also known as Cola de Rienzo, or simply as Rienzi. Rienzo was an Italian political in the fourteenth century. He styled himself as the 'tribune of the Roman people&apos. He is known as an early populist, for his demagogic rhetoric and anti-establishment sentiment. His rule as the Tribune of Rome was quickly accepted by the people due to his authority and appeal. He ruled Rome with stern justice, a stark contrast to the previous reign of license and disorder. After some time, he came into some trouble after seizing some barons, resulting in his waning power. He then sought refuge in Naples before journeying to Prague and seeking protection from the Emperor Charles IV. In Avignon, he was sentence to death, though the judgement wasn't carried out, though he remained in prison. However when the Pope died and was replaced by Pope Innocent VI, Rienzo was pardoned, and he eventually was given the title of senator, and was sent back to Italy. In Italy, Rienzo soon caused turmoil, and when he tried to escape, he was murdered by the mob. Rienzo was later seen as a romantic figure in the nineteenth century. He is the subject of Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel 'Rienzi&apos. Written by Benigne Dujardin under the pseudonym Boispreaux.
