E. Beresford Chancellor - Lost London Being a Description of Landmarks Which Have Disappeared

Title: Lost London Being a Description of Landmarks Which Have Disappeared
Description: London, Constable and Company Limited; Houghton Mifflin Company, 1926. First edition. Cloth. An intriguing first edition volume detailing London's lost buildings, featuring the artwork of John Crowther. In the late nineteenth century Charles Chadwyck-Healey, a barrister later knighted, commissioned artist John Crowther to record in watercolour buildings about London likely to be torn down during the Victorian expansion and modernisation of the capital, leading to Crowther to produce over 440 paintings. When E. Beresford Chancellor was approached to provide descriptions for this work, he organised the 'journey' the reader would take and provided an almost continuous narrative to guide them through a London lost to the twentieth century. First edition. Limited edition; only 1025 copies produced. With dust-wrapper. With 59 illustrated plates, both colour and monochrome, collated complete. A charming travelogue through a lost history, this work peers beyond the veil and presents London as it was. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with dust-wrapper. Externally, very smart, with only some minor shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Bumping to the bottom edge of the dust-wrapper, some handling marks to the front, and interior tape repair to the head of the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, though the front and rear hinges are tender. Pages are generally bright and clean with some occasional spotting throughout, heavier spotting to the fore-edge. This work is untrimmed, with occasional pages uncut. Very Good . Ill.: J. Crowther. Very Good/Very Good Indeed.
