Description: Vinegia; [Venice], Altobello Salicato, 1582. Vellum. A scarce work on the Roman and Ottoman militaries, written by the antiquarian and historian Guillaume de Choul and Francesco Sansovino. In Italian. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts. Complete with the rarely seen Roman camp folding plate. A scarce work. Two parts in one, bound with 'Informatione Della Militia Turchesca' by Francesco Sansovino. 'Informatione' does not have its own title page, but has a separate pagination and separate register. Vignette woodcut to the title page, and fifty-eight woodcuts to the text, some full page and some half page. Written in Italian. With a folding plan of the Roman camp to the rear. This is very very rarely seen. The pagination is to the recto. This work is an octavo, the signature run as A-K8, L4, A-C8, D4. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library, complete. This work is divided into two parts, the first by Guillaume Du Choul, and the second by Francesco Sansovino. Part one looks at three aspects of the Roman civilization; the art of building the military camps and military exercises, the baths, and the Roman religion, focussing heavily on the Roman military. Choul was a member of a humanist circle of Lyons. He was an antiquarian famous for his collection of antique coins. He did extensive research on ancient Rome, and was encouraged in his endeavours by King Francis I. Translated from French into Italian by Gabriele Simeoni, who was a good friend of Choul. He was an Italian Renaissance humanist, as well as being a military man, astrologer, and historian. Part two looks at Turkish military dress, written by Francesco Sansovino. Sansovino was an Italian scholar, known for his versatility in academics. He was one of the most important humanists of his century, and was also a man of letters and literary critic. A vellum bound scarce work on the Roman and Ottoman militaries. Rebound in a full vellum binding. Externally, smart. Light marks to the boards, as is usual with vellum. Very small loss to the spine label. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Small scorch mark to the top edge, 12-27 and 34-65 of Part I. Small closed tear to gutter of page 8 to Part I. Small tidemark to the fore edge of gathering E in Part I. Small tear to page 5/6 of Part II, affecting four words though with no loss. Folding plan with tape repairs to the verso. A few spots to the folding plan. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed .
