The very scarce third edition of Peter Heylyn's noted history, which touches on the world's geography, climate, belief systems, customs, politics and more. Illustrated, with the engraved title page, and four folding maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America, each lightly trimmed and laid down. A very scarce edition, with no record on the ESTC. This copy does not match any of the ESTC references, nor Wing H1690A, H1690 or H1691A. Pagination is similar to ESTC R177977 however the title page imprints do not match. Peter Heylyn's work is said to be the first that described many territories in the New World such as Australia and Terra del Fuego. He also looks at the Arctic and Antarctica. He looks at the journeys of famed explorers such as Drake. Heylyn or Heylin wrote many polemical, historical, political and theological tracts. He was a controversialist against the Puritans and his work 'History of the Reformation' brought contention. In a contemporary paneled calf binding. With the signatures: [1], A - 2G6, 2H4, 2I4, 2K-3R6, 3S4, 3T-4H6, [4i]6, 4i-5G4, 5H-5I6, 5L2, 5M2 Register and pagination at page 740/3S become irregular. Pagination jumps from 740-761 and the gathering only contains 4 leaves. However, the catch-words are accurate. At page 1098 the pagination alters however the register is continuous. With separate title pages for the separate books of 'Cosmographie' as called for. The register and pagination are continuous. Collated complete, according to the catch-words and gatherings, in addition to comparing this pagination to other similar copies on the ESTC this work appears complete. A scarce example of this important historical work. In a contemporary paneled calf binding. Externally, sound. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Loss to the head and tail of spine. Several marks to the boards. Hinges are slightly strained but remain firm. Chips to the extremities of the engraved title page, with it therefore laid down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Tape repair to the bottom of Z2 at the gutter. Tape repair to 3I2 to the gutter. 2K2 has a few contemporary ink stains to the page, not affecting the text. 4T has very light ink spots, as does 4V2-4X1. Fuchsia ink spill to 5L1, not affecting the text. Final leaf is laid down due to loss at the bottom of the page. All maps have been laid down, with small loss to their margins from chipping. Africa has a small loss to the lower edge. The occasional spots to pages. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
