Frederick Manning [Editor] - A Series of Views Taken on the Spot Intended to Illustrate Charles Cotton&Apos;S Work Entitled, the Second Part of the Complete Angler

Title: A Series of Views Taken on the Spot Intended to Illustrate Charles Cotton&Apos;S Work Entitled, the Second Part of the Complete Angler
Description: London, Truscott Son & Simmons, 1866. First edition. Cloth. A presentation copy of this collection of drawings depicting Charles Cotton's home of Beresford Hall, and several other famed locations noted in his 'Complete Angler&apos. Given from the editor's niece to one William Sillito. The first and only edition of this scarce work. Comprising of twenty four black and white illustrated plates. Manning notes to the introduction that, at the time of publication, there is little literature available regarding the residence of Charles Cotton, which is situated on the River Dove and was largely the setting of the second part of 'The Complete Angler&apos. He states that his brother-in-law John Lavincount Anderdon suggested that Beresford and the River Dove should be visited, and he hired an artist and made the same journey described by the Viator in the first edition of 'The Complete Angler&apos. These drawings were created nearly two hundred years after the first edition of Walton and Cotton's work. To the introduction Manning notes that 'the views accompanying this are taken on the spot and re-copied for me.' Although Beresford Hall was demolished in the 19th century, Manning had photographs taken prior to this and the sketches to this work are from those photographs. A charmingly illustrated work, bringing to life the setting of Cotton and Walton's popular fishing work. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, with loss to the backstrip, with the front hinge slightly strained but firm. Small loss to the cloth at the head of the front board. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Spotting to the page edges, with the occasional light spot otherwise. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .
