The first edition of this very scarce work relating to Charles Cotton the famous angler, depicting a facsimile letter written by William Alexander regarding Beresford Hall, Charles Cotton's residence. In the publisher's original binding. Collated, complete. Additional illustration of the fishing house at Beresford tipped in to the verso of the second 'life of the author' leaf. With a memoir of William Alexander to the start of the work. Alexander was a painter, illustrator and engraver. His medium tended to be watercolours, for which he was praised for the tasteful composition and simplicity. He is best remembered for his paintings of Imperial China. With an engraved frontispiece of Charles Cotton and Isaac Walton sat at a table smoking pipes. The preface notes 'Beresford Hall! there is something so charming in its sound that it cannot be described. To an Angler it is the Tally-Ho of the Fox-Hunter. a soul stirring Neck and Neck Race to the Horse Racer.' Prior to the facsimile text there is a short poem titled 'Walton and Cotton in the Fishing House&apos. This scarce facsimile of Alexander's handwriting depicts a length journey to Staffordshire to visit the location Cotton frequently mentioned. He discusses that he has sketched the Hall and described the romantic scenery. This manuscript was originally written in 1815. With the bookplate of William Macmath FSA Scot. Macmath was a nineteenth century scholar who contributed largely to Professor Francis Child's book 'The English and Scottish Popular Ballads&apos. In publisher's original binding. Externally, sound with loss to the spine. Front joint is split , with the hinge tender and held by only a small portion at the bottom. A few light marks to the boards.
