A self-taught painter, Herdman frequently made notes on how the city he loved was growing and changing. In total, he painted over 2,000 watercolours of Liverpool scenes. His landscapes were exhibited at the Royal Academy on several occasions between 1834 to 1861. With forty-eight tinted lithographic plates, including the three folding panoramic views. Collated, complete. The plates remain in a bright and generally clean condition. A charming collection of plates regarding Liverpool. With accompanying text by Herdman that give context to the views portrayed and the history of the locations. An uncommon and beautifully depicted selection of plates. In a half calf binding. Externally, worn. Large loss to the backstrip and to the joints. Front board is detached but present. Leather is lifting to the rear board. Hinges are weak and board may detach with further handling. Front endpaper is detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Plate 31 is closely cropped at the top edge, leaving the image with no blank margin. Pages are bright with just the odd spots.
