This copy has a fascinating association, and was bound by the German prisoners in Douglas during the First World War. With the library plate of Cefntilla Court to the front pastedown of the cloth binding. Cefntilla Court belonged to Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan. Following the death of his father, 1st Baron Raglan, a large group of his friends, admirers and comrades purchased the house and estate as a memorial to him. 1st Baron Raglan served in many military campaigns such as the Peninsular War and the Hundred Days. At Waterloo Raglan served on Wellington's staff. He later became the commander of the British troops sent to Crimea in 1854. Whilst in Crimea he was ordered to besiege Sevastopol. His command lead to the fateful Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. This work was bound by the German prisoners on the Isle of Man in 1915. The stamp of the 'Art School Alien Camp Douglas' is to the rear pastedown. The original wraps are bound in to this work. Illustrated, with a facsimile handwriting leaf. Bookseller's label to the original front wrap, 'P Rolandi Foreign Bookseller&apos. An interesting nineteenth century work on this important Napoleonic military figure, with a fascinating association and binding history. Rebound, in a grey cloth binding. The original wraps are bound in. Externally, generally smart with handling marks and shelfwear to the boards and spine. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Cefntilla&apos. Front wrap is loosening slightly. Otherwise, internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages. Otherwise just the odd spots to pages.
